Kate McDonnell, singer-songwriter from New York, plays her guitar upside down and backwards, and sings with her whole being. McDonnell has performed regularly in Europe, as well as the esteemed Newport Folk Festival, Kennedy Center, Mountain Stage, and WXPN’s “World Café,” all in the U.S. Her award-winning songwriting has been singled out for praise by The Village Voice and the Boston Globe. She has 6 CDs to date, the last two of which, “Ballad of a Bad Girl” (2021) (with Tony Levin and Jerry Marotta) and “TRAPEZE” (2024) charted in the top-5 upon their release. Between 2006 and 2020, Kate took a hiatus from professional music to earn her LCSW to work with troubled children before resuming her music career in 2020. Kate is back at it as a solo performer, as a duo with Jimi W. and occasionally with her band, Kate McDonnell and Her Right Hand Men. She tours the US, UK, and Europe. Of a recent May ’25 UK show, one reviewer stated, Kate is “A consummate professional, excellent musician, singer and songwriter and a very slick performer, but Kate’s sense of fun and just the ‘joy of being here’ shines through and really engages the audience.”
