Civil Disobedience Workshop

Website

Civil disobedience is a principled, time-honored, public, and effective method of bringing fierce nonviolent pressure to bear on unjust systems.

This training — with a break for lunch — introduces people to the philosophy and techniques of nonviolence and direct action; how affinity groups and consensus-based decision-making work; arrest and consequences; "solidarity" as a tool for actions, jail, and court; the role of support (legal and non-legal); day-of protest tips.

Alexis Danzig has trained hundreds of people to participate in principled direct action and nonviolent civil disobedience since joining ACT UP NY in 1988.

After helping to co-found Rise and Resist in response to the 2016 election, Alexis is delighted to travel to communities interested in learning how to organize democratically to resist attacks on cherished American values of freedom and equality and to become braver together in public.
