The Art of Shibori

Website

Discover the art of Shibori, a traditional Japanese resist-dyeing technique known for its rich indigo color and beautifully unexpected patterns.

In this hands-on workshop with teaching artist Katrin Reifeiss, you’ll fold, bind, clamp, and wrap fabric to create one-of-a-kind designs using indigo dye. Part art, part process, Shibori invites you to slow down and embrace a little unpredictability. No two pieces come out exactly the same, and that’s part of the beauty. As fabric unfolds from the dye bath, you’ll reveal layered patterns, soft imperfections, and striking contrasts unique to your piece.

During the workshop, you’ll learn two Shibori techniques. Participants are encouraged to bring pre-washed natural fiber fabrics or clothing to dye, including cotton, linen, hemp, silk, rayon, or natural fiber blends. Smaller items work best. Please avoid oversized items like duvet covers. You’ll also want to bring a plastic bag to transport your dyed fabric home. Whether you’re completely new to textile dyeing or simply curious to try something different, this workshop offers a relaxing and tactile way to spend time making with your hands.

About the Teaching Artist: Katrin Reifeiss is a Beacon-based textile artist and designer whose self-named line focuses on small-batch and made-to-order clothing and textiles created with longevity in mind. Working as a one-woman studio, Katrin hand dyes, paints, cuts, sews, and finishes each piece herself, incorporating traditional techniques like Japanese Shibori into her process. Rooted in her background and love of painting, Katrin’s work combines art, fashion, and slow craftsmanship through thoughtfully made textiles designed to be worn and loved for years. Her approach values natural materials, timeless design, and creating by hand in ways that honor both the process and the history behind these traditional dyeing techniques.
