Explore the world of natural dyes in this hands-on tie-dye workshop using pigments made from plants, spices, fruits, and other natural materials.
Overview: Far from the bright synthetic dyes many of us grew up with, this workshop explores a slower, more organic approach to color making. Using ingredients like indigo, turmeric, blueberries, coffee, and beets, participants will experiment with natural dyes that create earthy tones, subtle variations, and one-of-a-kind patterns on fabric. Using folding, binding, and dyeing techniques, you’ll create your own naturally dyed cotton t-shirt while learning how natural dyes are made, how different ingredients react on fabric, and why artists and makers continue to return to plant-based color and process-driven ways of working.
Part science experiment, part creative exploration, this beginner-friendly workshop invites you to slow down, experiment, and embrace the beauty of working with natural materials. Participants should bring one pre-washed white 100% cotton t-shirt. All dyes and workshop materials are provided. We recommend bringing a paper or plastic bag to bring your wet shirt home. Please note: we’re planning to hold the workshop in the backyard of the studio building, but if it’s too hot or rainy, we’ll move the workshop indoors.
